Three ways to run Odoo, and the right one is decided by two questions: which edition do you run, and who maintains custom code? Here is the honest matrix – including the option Odoo’s own sales pages skip.
The pattern we see: Odoo Online until Studio stops being enough, Odoo.sh while Enterprise licensing is a given – and a managed EU VPS as the default for everyone running Community, at a fraction of the platform cost.
No. Both of Odoo’s platforms require an Enterprise subscription. The standard Community path is a VPS – Hetzner, OVH or a local provider – with a native or Docker install, either administered in-house or under a managed-hosting contract.
For 10–30 users, comfortably – 4 vCPUs and 16 GB RAM handle a typical SME database with room to spare. The bottleneck is PostgreSQL and worker configuration, not raw hardware. Plan an upgrade when heavy reporting arrives or concurrent users pass ~50.
All three can be run GDPR-compliant. The difference is the processor chain: on Online and Odoo.sh you accept Odoo SA (and its cloud provider) as processors with their region options; your own EU server gives the shortest chain and free choice of datacentre – which some public-sector and finance clients simply require.
Online: Odoo does everything. Odoo.sh: the platform provides the tools, the cadence is yours. Own server: everything is yours – which is fine exactly when a managed contract makes it someone’s named job with response times. The dangerous setup is the unowned middle: a VPS nobody patches.
